Last Week in the Garden

Harvesting

The picture below shows everything that was harvested from the garden last week.

White Wonder cucumbers, which are delicious. The larger of the two was a bit too bitter as I’d left it too long before picking.

Basil and Red Basil, which have an amazing fresh taste. This is my first year growing Thai Basil, which has a flavour similar to Star Anise, and is great when used as a substitute.

Spinach leaves, which got a little big, but will be used in cooking. They were picked off of the plant.

Chickpeas. There are still a lot growing, and only the ones that were ripe were harvested, with many more left on the plants. Some (not pictured) had gone mouldy in the shell, presumably due to the wet weather that we’ve been having recently.

Tumbling Toms, Black Cherry, and San Marzano Plum Tomatoes. Tumbling Toms and Black Cherry are great for eating in salads, etc. and plum tomatoes are great for salsa or cooking.

Patty Pan, which is a variety of courgette.

Growing

Sweetcorn. The tassels came up a bit too quick, but the cobs themselves are starting to come out, with some being pollinated and starting to grow, as the tassels drop the pollen and the silks catch it to fertilise the kernels.

Pumpkins. This is my first year growing Atlantic Giant Pumpkins, which, as the name suggests, can grow to be very big. They seem to be growing well, but there’s no indication that they will be particularly big pumpkins this year. I love the colour of these, and they are all slightly different to each other. Some of the plants are starting to die back, as they put their energy into the fruits.

Other squashes. I’m not sure what squash the yellow one is, as we had a few unlabelled seeds. White Wonder Cucumbers are still growing, as are Patty Pan Courgettes, and some winter squashes.

Peppers. The plants are doing really well, and there are quite a few peppers growing on many of them. The one in the picture that is turning red is from one of the pepper plants that was overwintered.

Aubergines. Some of the plants now have flowers, which I have tried to pollinate. Hopefully they form fruits.

Sugar Baby Watermelon. The other watermelon on the plant has died, but this one is doing well as is close to being harvested.

Cauliflower, that is still small but starting to grow.

More of all of the things that were harvested. And more.
