Spiders in the Garden

Spiders in the Garden

Spiders are great at eating pests. They are often active from the start of spring, helping protect your plants from pests for the entire growing season.

Different spiders have different diets, but you can expect spiders in the garden to eat a variety of pests, including fruit flies and aphids. They can even eat mosquitoes and midges, which can help increase your enjoyment in the garden.

Some spiders like to hide under mulch. You can use grass clippings, wood chips, or other materials for this. Find out more in my dedicated mulch post.

Other spiders like perennial plants, shrubs, and other places for their webs. You can leave plant stalks standing in winter, and some debris, for them to spend the winter, alongside beneficial insects like ladybirds.

As with most other things in the garden, avoiding the use of pesticides, and trying to be as natural as possible, is going to be the best thing to do here.
