February in the Garden

February in the Garden

Here’s a look ahead to what you might see in the garden and the jobs that you can do during February.

Things in the garden

Snowdrops should be flowering already, as should hellebore. It might be a good idea to mark where they are before they die back.

Primroses might be coming up and starting to flower.

March flowering plants should be coming up now, including daffodils, bluebells, grape hyacinth, and wood anemone.

Rhubarb might be coming up.

You might see some queen bees as they emerge from hibernation and find somewhere to nest.

Jobs to do in the garden

Deciding what you want to grow this year and planning out your growing area.

Buying seeds if you don’t already have the ones that you want to grow. (I have linked my affiliate link for JustSeed, which I’d very much appreciate you using if you are going to buy seeds, as it supports me).

Preparing for the growing season by weeding or digging over the ground.

Coppice hazel trees. If you have any hazel trees in your garden, they may still be dormant and you can coppice them.

Prune apple trees. They want to be pruned while dormant in winter, which is usually between November and early March.

Plants to grow

If you are sowing broad beans inside or protected outside, then you can sow them in February.

You might be able to start sowing cabbage seeds, depending on location and variety.

You can plant radishes under cold protection.

You may want to chit potatoes, which is usually done 6 weeks before planting.

If you will be growing your tomatoes in a greenhouse, then you can sow the seeds from late February.

If you are growing onions from seeds, then you can sow these either inside or outside in February.

You can sow carrot seeds outside from February to July, so you can sow these if that works for you.

You can sow basil, coriander or oregano seeds inside from late February.

You can sow dill seeds inside year-round.

If you are growing sage from seeds, you can sow these in February.

You can plant blackberries, gooseberries, or raspberries outside while they are still dormant.

You can sow rose campion seeds from late February until late April.
